Direct flight to Brazil in the wings
29 Jan 2004, 0201 hrs IST,TNN
MUMBAI: Indian businessmen and tourists may soon be winging their way to Brazil via a direct flight between the two countries if Brazilian tourism minister Walfredo Mares Guia has his way.
The minister is part of the large business delegation led by Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva which held a meeting with the CII in the city on Wednesday.
Mr Mares Guia said he was holding talks with Air-India on a plan to start direct flights between Brazil and India with a stopover in Johannesburg.
Two-way trade and tourism between the two countries is set to expand with the Brazilian president calling for increased cooperation in the fields of civil construction, railways, ethanol production, pharmaceuticals and petroleum.
“We have complementary expertise and India’s preferential agreement with Mercosur is a big feat as it opened out trade with several countries in South America,’’ Mr Mares Guia said.
President Lula da Silva told city businessmen that his foreign minister will come in March and have discussions with the Indian and South African governments concerning a trilateral agreement between the countries on trade issues. Brazil will also be participating in a trade fair in India in November.
